      Home Schooled Co-op Culinary Classes

      Market District has partnered with a local Home Schooled Co-op to develop educational Cooking Classes. Students will learn a variety of techniques and skills to use in the kitchen. Sign up individually or for the series! Parents are required to sign waivers for each child participating in the classes. Students need to bring their own aprons or wear clothes that may get soiled. Please register and pay through Eventbrite. Search Carmel Market District Home Schooled Co-op. Each class will have a 72 hour cutoff for registering. Any special dietary needs or allergens your student may have must be communicated to Market District 72 hours prior to the event in order for them to accommodate the request. Each class will include a lesson plan that is based around the theme of each class. The Market District Cooking School is located on the 2nd Floor above the restaurant, table by Market District. Parents need to arrive 10-15 minutes before the class to sign a waiver for each child attending the class. All classes will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m.   All classes are limited to 24 participants. 2017/2018 Culinary Classes are as follows: Sept 22nd 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. For the love of chocolate! Question…Who loves chocolate? Better question…who doesn’t love chocolate? We will explore where chocolate comes from & how it’s made. Kids will be sampling semi-sweet, milk, white and dark chocolates, noting the differences. Our exploration will continue as we taste chocolate paired with orange zest, chili peppers, raspberries, caramel, and sea salt. Our aspiring chefs will make bon bons from Brazil as well as Mexican hot chocolate!   October 20th 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. Ravioli cooking class Let’s journey to Italy! We will learn the history and art of making ravioli by hand. Kids will explore the techniques of pasta making. We will be making pumpkin ravioli with a butter sage sauce, as well as a traditional ravioli stuffed with Italian cheese paired with old fashioned Nonna’s tomato basil sauce.   November 10th 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. Pies, Crumbles & Tarts Baking Class Children will learn the basics of a good pie crust and learn to make a variety of baked goods. The rich history of these treats will be explored. We will be making cranberry apple pies, blueberry cobbler, and a fresh seasonal tart. CLASS-POSTPONED for Tamale class next year! 2018 *( Date will be announced). Kids will learn how to make tamales the old-fashioned way. Yes, we will be steaming corn husk tamales! They will be making pepper jack cheese tamales con Queso, de Pollo (chicken) Picada Tamale with Pico de Gallo and cilantro lime crema. Chefs will learn about the history, language and culture of Mexico. What a fabulous opportunity for our children!   Janunary 19th 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. Cheese-Making Class! Come join us for another super fun class! Kids will explore cheeses from around the globe with Michael, our Cheesemonger from our very own specialty cheese department. Our little chefs will sample different cheeses and learn the ancient art of cheese making. We will be making fresh Mozzarella, Ricotta (as they make it in Italy!) and Paneer (like they make it in India!). What an unbelievable experience!   Mardi Gras Cooking Class February 9th 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. Kids will learn about Cajun cuisine, learning how to make the original King Cake as well as Cajun beans and rice. Young chefs will learn the history of Chicory “coffee”.   As all chicory root is non caffeinated, kids will get to experience this regional culinary delight with cream and sugar! There is much history to learn about this regional cuisine, as several cultures diverge together, making Creole a special treat to experience.   Ice Cream class March 9th 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. Calling all kids! Young chefs will learn the science behind how different kinds of ice creams are made. We will compare and contrast the various frozen treats such as ice cream, frozen yogurt and gelato. We will enjoy making milk shakes and hand scooped bowls with an unimaginable choice of toppings! Hand crank and salt machines will be used…kids…this is the real deal!   Exotic Fruits Class April 13th 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. Kids will have opportunity to learn about exotic fruits today! Aspiring chefs will learn where they originate (some are thousands of years old!) and the culinary delights they can be lovingly transformed into! They will be making some fun recipes with their “new” discoveries. Some of the fruits we hope to incorporate: pomegranate, concord grapes, passion fruit, papaya, figs, dates, and Buddha’s Hand, etc. Choice of exotic fruits will be based on availability of course!   Mother’s Day Brunch Ideas May 11th 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. Kids, learn how to make an unforgettable breakfast for your mom! Moms, this is your chance to sleep in and be served a delectable breakfast in bed! Don’t miss this final culinary class of the 2017/2018 school year! Little chefs, you will be making amazing yeast cinnamon rolls, quiche, fresh fruit, and a Hoosier Sunrise drink. Your moms will be amazed when they learn that you not only had a fabulous time, but you practiced a plethora of culinary skills (working with knives, following a recipe, cracking eggs), math (measurements), and science (density)!
