Trans Day of Visibility: A Family Workshop

Transgender Day of Visiblity is March 31st.  This day is meant to be one of celebration, which acknowledges the achievements of the Transgender Community, and encourages us to out and proud.  Transgender visibility has increased exponentially in recent years, we all know it has helped in many ways, and many more transgender people have access to the support and services they need.  But also, visibility is complex, making us more exposed to violence and discrimination. This year, to celebrate Transgender Day of Visibility, Affirm/ED presents a workshop for the whole family.  This workshop will aim to help Transgender adults process how visibility affects our lives, as well as giving opportunities to be visibile in ways that feel affirming.  Adult family members of transgender people, whether they be parents, siblings, significant others, or adult children of trans people, are all welcome to learn about the complexity of transgender visibility from a panel of transgender community members, and then reflect on how visiblity afffects their family.  Youth and children will be engaged in a story telling workshop, where trans adults will share a little of their story, and a time when sharing their story was good or bad for them.  Children will be encouraged to participate, and think about when it is appropriate to share different parts of their story.  A variety of art materials will be availble for children to choose how they might like to share things they are proud of about themselves. Families will then come together to discuss how their own family feels about visiblity.  Discussion boundaries, what we don't like to share, but also things we are proud of about our family that we do like to share.  There will be an oppertunity to make a small statement or share something about yourself or your family on camera.  This will be complied into a video to be shared encouraging the transgender community.  This is completely optional, and all minors must have parent permission. Everyone at the event will have the option to opt out of all pictures and videos.  We will end with a meal together. Please make sure to indicate your food needs.   A playroom will be avialable for the youngest of our family members.  The Church Within is an accessible space, but please share if you have any concerns, we want to make sure everyone is able to join us. All people identifying as transgender, non-binary, 3rd gender, gender varient, or such is welcome!  We have no gender police here.   Please bring your family!
