      Beyond Code.org: micro:bit

      This workshop is intended for elementary and middle school educators who are wondering “what’s next?” after teaching the Code.org CS Fundamentals Courses E, F and/or Express.  This 1-day workshop will give participants the opportunity to program mirco:bits as well as explore 4 separate free curricula that they can bring to their classrooms to introduce or expand physical computing in their schools. Topics and High-Level Agenda Learn definitions for physical computing, computational thinking, and computer science education Understand the importance of physical computing and coding Exploring the micro:bit and learning about all it’s capabilities Learning about all available micro:bit resources Diving deeper into the CS Fundamentals extension lessons developed by micro:bit Exploring other micro:bit lesson plans, curricula and extensions What’s included? Access to micro:bit’s CS Fundamentals lesson plans (these are free and available for anyone to use) Access to shared Google Drive folder with Indiana CS Standards based content Nextech swag, including a micro:bit Certificate of completion and PGP points What to Bring  A laptop (or chromebook), a charger, and a water bottle.  We will provide everything else! Faciliator Bio Having worked in the industry, the classroom, and at non-profits, Jenna Garcia has a unique understanding of the needs of classroom teachers as well as how to make those new to computer science excited about bringing this new topic to their students.  Jenna’s industry experience spans technical consulting, software development and solution architecting. She spent 4 years teaching computer science and math to high school students in NYC and Chicago Public Schools. Outside of the classroom, Jenna has run many computer science courses for students 1st - 8th grade in her community.  Having recently moved from being at Code.org for 4 years, Jenna has an in-depth knowledge of the CS Fundamentals courses and is excited to help general education classroom teachers take the dive into the world of computer science.
